Pixie Lott recently released Turn It Up Louder – an extended version of her debut album.
The 19-year-old’s first two singles, Mama Do and Girls And Boys, were both number-one hits, and her debut album Turn It Up hasn’t left the Top 40 since its release.Pixie, originally from Bromley, south-east London, begins her first UK tour on November 23. Turn It Up Louder is out now.
You must be really excited to be going out on your first headline tour?
I can’t wait, really can’t wait. I’ve been a support act a few times so it’s nice to have my own show after two years or so.
What have you got planned?
We actually start rehearsing this week, so I only know who is going to be there. We’ve got four dancers – which will be amazing. I haven’t danced properly since leaving school really, so I’m looking forward to that. There will be an acoustic set in the middle too, where I’m going to sing some of the covers I’ve done on YouTube, some medleys and things.
Have you been going to gigs over the past year to grab ideas?
I toured with Rihanna recently and she’s got this massive extravaganza with dancers and tanks and things. So seeing that every night made me want something crazy like that. One day maybe.
Are you nervous?
I’m just really excited, this is the thing I’ve been working toward and dreamed about, so it’s more excitement than anything else.
The first single went in at No.1: did you expect that?
When you release your first single you have no idea. Because it took so long to make the album and actually get heard, it was a frustrating, long process, but once it happened it happened really quickly. I wasn’t expecting that at all. I didn’t expect my single to go in at number one.
Things are taking off in America too?
Yes, things are going well over there. I’m part of Fred: The Movie, which was released there earlier in the year, but comes out here in December. It’s done really well on iTunes, and I’m going to go out there in February to do some promotion. No US tour as yet… so it’ll be radio performances and interviews hopefully.
You were a guest judge on the X Factor, and Simon Cowell was very complimentary about your performance. Would you be up for more of that?
Definitely. It was a totally different experience for me, because I’m so used to being on the other side. I still audition for things now, so I had a lot of sympathy for the people in front of us. It was really different but I loved it. Long day though, like 14 hours or something. None of the people I saw made it through to the live stages though, so I can’t really root for anyone that I put through.
Have you got a song you’re particularly looking forward to performing?
I love singing new stuff, so I can’t wait to sing the extra material we’ve done for Turn It Up Louder. I’ve performed my older singles on a regular basis, so I’m used to singing them. Doing anything with the live band will be great though, and the songs that people know and sing back will be a lot of fun.
Have you got merchandise? What’s it like seeing your face on a T-shirt?
We’re working on it at the moment, and because it’s called the Crazy Cats tour, I want some cat ears people can wear. My face on a T-shirt though, that is weird! I was recently given a T-shirt by Nando’s, because I go there quite a lot, and they’ve made a special T-shirt with my name on it. My friend wears it all the time.
How are preparations for the second album?
Well I’m going to the US, but the rest of the year will be spent writing the album. I think I’ve moved on quite a lot from the first album, and really want to spend time getting the second album right. I think it’ll be more soulful and have one sound rather than moving around through styles as much.
